Since its first description in 2010 and its commercialization in 2012, SWATH acquisition (a data independent acquisition strategy) has transformed the field of quantitative proteomics. And the needs of personalized medicine have likewise transformed SWATH acquisition, through the expanded need for robust, reproducible quantitative proteomics measurements. Innovations in data acquisition, improvements in instrument hardware have resulted large improvements in data generation. The numbers of samples required in today’s biomarker studies have further pushed the technique in terms of speed, robustness and scale, leading to the workflow used today. We will discuss these series of innovations and their impact on results quality, how cloud-based processing is addressing the challenges of scale and how increased integration across omics will expand our biological insight.
